The glamour of decadent lifestyles devoid of God is often communicated through the lyrics of songs, movies, fashion and many of the entertainers that our youth look up to as their heroes. These false illusions of deception are perceived by a majority of our young people as the epitome of joy and freedom. But what are often conveniently left out of these portrayals are the agonizing consequences of such destructive lifestyles. Meaningful pleasure comes not when we are enslaved by the empty promises of the world, but when we are living in loving obedience to God.
Young Men of Valor is a one-day event to bring together teen boys and young adult men, from different walks of life to give answers and to impart biblical truths with regard to many pertinent issues that they face today. The program format includes locally gifted teachers, musicians, food, and group interactions.
After reviewing the evaluations the guys overwhelmingly ask for Young Men of Valor to continue and to expand the program with activities and group interactions. The attendees express their sincere appreciation of having matured men of wisdom and integrity to take the time to listen to them, talk with them and share their wisdom.
In my work as a former Assistant Director of Jail Chaplains Ministry serving the Harris County Jail, I have counseled and shared with hundreds of young men who have expressed the desire to have known someone who could have been a positive mentor in their lives to share biblical truths as well as be a father like figure to them due to the lack or absence of fathers in the household.
My goal is to provide an opportunity to help fill that loud cry which is being sounded across America and the world, to help fill the spiritual vacuum in the hearts and souls of our young men and to aid as a preventive against crime, suicide, drugs, gangs, tears, pain, scars, sorrow, incarceration and both physical or spiritual death.
I believe for change to take place in the life of teen boys and young adult men, they need to be taught the truth and able to understand that truth at a level they can comprehend.
In the words of Edward Everett Hale, “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” Will you join me?
